15 Years – A letter to Yewande

Posted on Posted in BLOG, FAMILY LIFE, PERSONAL

I remember that day in December like it was yesterday. You just turned 13 and I was 17. I remember every single detail. The braids you had on, the brown dress with the little jacket you were wearing and yes the smile on your face when I approached to ask your name. I didn’t quite understand it then. I was way too young to comprehend it. But even as young as I was, I knew that meeting you, was special.

15 years has passed since you said I DO. 15 roller coaster years of love and hate, tears and laughter, hurts and joyous moments, Success and failure. If I was to have an opportunity to have a do over, I will choose you and run down the same path all over again. I am old enough to review all the major decisions of my life and it’s all littered with – The mistakes, the bad decisions, and the missed opportunities. But there is one decision that I always knew I got right and that was choosing you.

Remember that song we used to sing when we were dating?

I’ll choose you again and again, I’ll choose you again and again
You mean so much to me, I’ll choose you again
I’ll choose you again and again, I’ll choose you again and again
You mean so much to me, I’ll choose you again

Ofcourse, it was meant to be a worship song, but we somehow turned it into our own love song. Papa God must have been having a laugh at us. Do you also remember one of our favorite songs? Michael Jacksons “Remember the times”? The times, I would travel all the way down to Lagos just to see your face or you will suddenly appear on my door step unannounced in PH? Do you remember those letters we used to write religiously to each other and the greeting cards? You always seem to have an eye for greeting cards. I could never keep up. Do you remember those times in your small room in Ago-Iwoye where we would compose songs and I will play the keyboard while you sing? My heart is filled with so much memories of our times together that sometimes I don’t know what I will do without you. I need you that much.

15 years is too short to forget how beautiful and wondering you are to me. In reality it represents a third of my life. If I should add the 6 years in which we were friends plus the 6 years in which we dated, that’s a whopping 60% of my life spent with you in it.

For 15 years, I have seen you transform from being a wife to a mother. I can’t compete with the grace and wisdom in which you handle the children. Most especially Daniel. Heaven had you in mind to fill in for my deficiencies as a parent. Without you I would be clueless of what to do. These children, your children will forever bless the day you were born.

On this day, as we celebrate 15 years of our journey together, I want to once again “Remember the times” by singing that…

I’ll choose you again and again, I’ll choose you again and again
You mean so much to me, I’ll choose you again
I’ll choose you again and again, I’ll choose you again and again
You mean so much to me, I’ll choose you again
